Following her election as Archbishop of Wales, we were grateful to be joined by Bishop Cherry to commission a total of twelve Lay Worship Leaders and one Pastoral Assistant. Those that had been put forward for the course from across the MA gathered at St Michael’s, Llanvihangel Crucorney on the 31st August for their commissioning, supported by family and friends. It is safe to say, we had a full house, very quickly running out of service sheets and chairs – what a wonderful problem to have!
Bishop Cherry spoke of the importance of answering God’s call to ministry, no matter how challenging! She recalled her struggle to answer God’s call as an introverted youth but that the call to spread the word of the Gospel eventually became too strong to resist. Echoing the words, “Those whom God calls, God equips”, Cherry highlighted the importance of trust in God in whatever works He has planned. She also stressed the need for the Church to nurture, not discourage these gifts and talents. We prayed together for God’s guidance on our new Worship Leaders and Pastoral Assistants as they begin, or continue, to minister the Good News of Jesus Christ.
The service was also a general celebration of all lay roles, no matter how small. We were reminded to give thanks for all those who support our churches, in whatever capacity they are able.
We were blessed to be accompanied by the Ministry Area Pop-Up Choir, directed by Philip Norman who lead us in 4 hymns, as well as two of their own anthems, “O God Thy Power is Wonderful”, and “As Pants the Hart”
Many thanks to everyone at St Michael’s for hosting, organising, guiding, handing out refreshments, clearing away and tidying – without laity, this service would not have been possible!
