There had been plenty of talks of Ministry Area Pilgrimages as a way of exploring new places but also building relationships with those across the MA. We gathered on Saturday 26th July at St Teilo’s, Llantilio Pertholey to be collected by our coach to Newport Cathedral, our mother church.
On arrival, we were greeted by Rev’d Canon John Connell. Many knew Father John from his time at Llantilio Pertholey as well as St Mary’s Priory and he now takes up his new position as Canon for Worship and Congregational Life. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends over tea and coffee.
We then enjoyed an engaging talk on the history of the Cathedral by Malcolm Philips. We were told so many interesting facts, some of which new to us all. (Like St Woolos’ not achieving Cathedral status until 1949!) It felt as though we were being carried through the history of the centuries. All this could easily be imagined as we sat between the ancient stone columns of the nave and medieval timber roof. This was in striking contrast to the dramatic East window and surrounding designed by John Piper mid 1960s.
Everyone had opportunities throughout the day to explore areas of the Cathedral, have some quiet times of reflections and offer private devotions. the Cathedral Shop was also open with a wide range of cards, stationery, ornaments and spiritual readings.
We were lucky enough to be joined by Bishop Cherry for a bring and share lunch. Many thanks to everyone who offered to bring something for our table – what a spread we enjoyed! The Bishop then led us in a short act of worship in which we gave thanks for our time of fellowship and asked the Spirit to continue guiding us in our wider ministry. We offered our prayers to Bishop Cherry ahead of the Electoral College next week to select a new Archbishop of Wales.

- Everyone for coming! Without everyone’s enthusiasm, this trip wouldn’t have been possible.
